Do herbal products expire faster? How to tell, and how to store them

Herbal products do have shorter useful lives than heavily preserved ones, and the reason is straightforward: fewer preservatives means less protection. What follows is how to tell when something has turned, and how to slow it down.

Why the shelf life is shorter

Preservatives exist to stop microbial growth and delay oxidation. Products formulated with minimal preservative systems are more pleasant on skin and more vulnerable in the jar — particularly anything containing water, which is what bacteria need.

Oils and dry powders last considerably longer than creams and anything water-based, for the same reason.

How to tell an oil has gone off

• Smell first. Rancid oil smells sharp, waxy, faintly like old crayons. It is unmistakable once you have noticed it.
• Colour. Noticeably darker than when you bought it.
• Texture. Thicker, stickier, or separated in a way that does not resolve when you shake it.

A rancid oil will not poison you, but it is oxidised, which means it can irritate skin rather than condition it.

Powders and packs

Dry powders — henna, dant manjan, face packs — last well as long as they stay dry. The thing that ruins them is a wet spoon or wet fingers going into the container. Any clumping is a sign moisture got in.

Storage: four things that make the real difference

1. Away from light. UV drives oxidation. A cupboard beats a windowsill and beats a bathroom shelf by the window.
2. Away from heat. Which rules out most Indian bathrooms in May. A bedroom drawer is genuinely better.
3. Lids closed properly. Air is the other half of oxidation.
4. Dry hands, or a spoon. Every finger dipped into a jar introduces moisture and bacteria.

Reading the pack

Look for the PAO symbol — a small open jar with a number, like 6M or 12M. That is months after opening, which is a different figure from the expiry date and usually the one that matters.

The practical version

Buy sizes you will actually finish. A 20ml serum used at two drops a night lasts months; a large bottle bought for the discount may well turn before you reach the bottom. That is part of why our trial combo exists in small sizes.
