Over-cleansing: why washing more often makes oily skin worse
If your face is shiny by lunchtime and you have responded by washing it more often, you have probably made the problem worse. Over-cleansing is the most common self-inflicted skin problem there is, and oily skin is where it starts.
The feedback loop
Skin maintains a thin barrier of oil and lipids that keeps water in and irritants out. A harsh or frequent wash strips it. The skin registers the loss and responds by producing more oil — often more than it started with.
So the sequence runs: wash because you feel oily, feel tight, feel oily again sooner, wash again. Each turn makes the next one arrive faster.
How to tell you have crossed the line
- Skin feels tight or squeaky straight after washing. Clean should feel comfortable, not stripped.
- You are shiny again within two or three hours.
- Patches of flaking sitting alongside oily areas — the classic sign of a damaged barrier, and the thing most often mistaken for "combination skin".
- Products that never used to sting now do.
What to do instead
Twice a day. That is it. Morning and night, plus a rinse after heavy exercise. Not five times, not "whenever it feels oily".
Use lukewarm water — hot water strips lipids on its own. And give a gentler cleanser a genuine two weeks before deciding, because a barrier that took months to compromise does not recover in three days.
Choosing between our two washes
- Charcoal Face Wash (₹299) — for skin that genuinely runs oily, or city commutes. Charcoal binds oil and grime rather than dissolving the barrier with it.
- Pureglow Face Wash (₹299) — the gentler of the two, and the right starting point if your skin already feels tight.
The part that feels wrong
Moisturise oily skin. People skip this precisely because they feel greasy, and skipping it is what keeps the loop running. Oil production is the skin's answer to moisture loss; give it moisture and it has less reason to overproduce.
Give any change a fortnight before judging it, and patch-test anything new on your forearm first.
